Especializada en el estudio de las redes comerciales en el contexto de la navegación atlántica, principalmente de las comunidades de origen neerlandés, la construcción naval y la aplicación de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) al análisis de rutas y redes en la Historia y la Arqueología marítima de los siglos XVI al XVIII.

My field of expertise is the study of trading and merchant networks in the context of Atlantic shipping, mainly communities of Dutch and Flemish origin, shipbuilding and the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the analysis of routes and networks in the History and Maritime archeology from the 16th to the 18th centuries.

En el campo de la historia social y económica de la Carrera de Indias ha desarrollado estudios sobre las instituciones del comercio de Indias (la Casa de la Contratación) y el papel de los agentes, aplicando análisis locales y transnacionales en el contexto de las rutas del Atlántico Ibérico. En este marco he reforzado varios temas de estudio desarrollando perspectivas teóricas y nuevas metodologías multidisciplinares en el campo del uso de bases de datos de distinta naturaleza para los estudios combinados de Historia y Arqueología marítima que da como resultado el visor web alojado en la Unidad SIG del CSIC.

In the field of social and economic history of the Carrera de Indias, I have developed studies on the institutions of the Indies trade (the Casa de la Contratación) and the role of the agents, applying local and transnational analyses in the context of the trading routes of the “Carrera de Indiias”, with focus in the Iberian Atlantic. Within this framework, I have reinforced several study topics by developing theoretical perspectives and new multidisciplinary methodologies in the field of the use of databases by combining Maritime History and Underwater Archeology. This investigation has produced the web mapping and GIS-oriented Database supported by the SIGyHD Laboratory at the CCHS-CSIC.

Ha participado como profesora, colaboradora y tutora de master universitarios y conferenciante en varias universidades en Europa, América y Asia, y en diversos proyectos de investigación nacionales e internacionales. Ha dirigido 10 proyectos financiados por los Planes Nacionales del ministerio y 3 proyectos europeos financiados por la European Science Foundation (EUROCORES Programme, TECT “The evolution of cooperation and trading”), del Programa Marie Curie, 7th Programa Marco, y Horizon2020. Entre ellos destaca el impacto del proyecto ForSEAdiscovery en donde lideró un consorcio internacional dedicado a estudios de Historia y Arqueología marítima.

I have participated as a professor, collaborator, and teaching tutor of university masters and lecturer in several universities in Europe, America, and Asia, and in various national and international research projects. I have led 10 funded research projects financed by the National Endowment for the Humanities (Ministerio de Cultura y Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Spanish Government), the CSIC (I-LINKS and PIE calls) and 3 European funded research projects financed by the European Science Foundation (EUROCORES Programme, TECT “The evolution of cooperation and trading”), the Marie Curie Programme, the 7th Framework Programme, and Horizon2020. Among them, the impact of the ForSEAdiscovery project (PITN-GA2013-607545) stands out, where I led an international consortium dedicated to studies of Maritime History and Archaeology.

Actualmente dirige cuatro proyectos de investigación de Historia Moderna y Arqueología subacuática, financiados por la Unión Europea (Horizon2020), por el CSIC (convocatorias PIE e I-LINK para la consolidación de consorcios internacionales) y por el Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.

She is currently leading four research projects in Modern History and Underwater Archaeology, funded by the European Union (Horizon2020), by the CSIC (PIE and I-LINK call for proposals for the consolidation of international consortia) and by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

I am also co-author of the CSIC White Papers (Libros Blancos): 13 (Ocean); and 11 (Artificial Intelligence, robotics and data science). Since 2018 I have been a member of the SH6 Evaluation Panel “The History of the Human Past” (ERC-CoG), of the European Science Foundation (ERC) and of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Program, Horizon Europe of the European Commission.
